Small Gods

Small Gods (Discworld, #13) - Terry Pratchett The Great God Om spoke to the novice Brutha, and he said "Hey you". Not quite what might be expected from one's god. Partly as this god isn't quite what a believer might expect, on account of him currently being manifest as a tortoise. A shape that's a little embarrasing for a god. The time of the prophet is nigh only the people have stopped believing in the God himself, instead they believe only in the mechanism of belief, the church and associated paraphenalia. A long walk across the desert teaches both the God and the novice something about the nature of gods and people. Could possibly be read as a highly critical allegory of the modern church, but, you know what, I was having far to much fun to get that hung up on any deep symbolic meaning
