April's reading group book set in the long, hot summer of '76. Jess and her brother live on a farm with their repressive father, their mother having left them some years ago. The farm is sturggling, and the summer isn't helping. In one sense, nothing much unusual happens, until one earth shattering event impacts on the family, but in another sense it's full of incident. A slow boil book, but it does get to you. I ended up rooting for Jess and her dreams of university.
