History of England in 100 Places: From Stonehenge to the Gherkin

History of England in 100 Places: From Stonehenge to the Gherkin - John Julius Norwich It's an interesting surmise - which of the very many extant historic places in the UK best describe the history of these islands. So, you get Stonehenge, Tower of London, Grenwich, as you might expect. but you also get a lot of places that you might not notice or know about. the oldest extant Saxon chapel, for example (actually, this is disputed, so he does give the other possibilities as well) An almost unaltered Middle ages house, relics of the industrial revolution and so on. The variety is enormous. At times it does feel like he's included a location just to talk about the owner, but I can cope with that. Very up to date, including The Shard as the final entry. A wide ranging mix, and easy enough to dip in & out of. Some of them have entered my "Must see" list...
